Welcome to Nature Calls – our series which will take you on a fun and exciting journey to the natural world. Every month Nature Calls will feature a different topic on nature. Each topic will have interesting information you can access and read, think about, and importantly, for you to get out in the outdoors and observe and record.
The information and activities designed are for children aged 8-14. Nature Calls features plants, animals and creepy-crawlies you will come across in your home, backyard, school campus or when you go out with your family and friends.
Your Nature Calls Field Diary
The first thing to do is to get yourself a diary. It should be small enough so that you can carry it everywhere you go. Call it your “Nature Calls Field Diary”. Your field diary should be the place you record all the new things you discover every day and to jot down your thoughts and ideas.
Typically every observation you make should have a date, time and place. Describe the immediate surroundings where you make your observation (for example: close to a road, on a shrub/tree, next to a garbage dump, on a potted plant…). Try and be as descriptive as possible when you take notes in your field diary, this is helpful when you look through your field notes later. If you like sketching, a basic sketch will help you record your observations quickly. Or if you have a camera handy you can take pictures as well!
What are you waiting for? Go, get out there in the outdoors, explore, and tell us what exciting things you discover on your quest to find out more about our natural world!
